Theis had actually been present, while drunk and under the influence of drugs, during the rape and murder of the earlier victim, Mette. In the book the killer was a local psychopath that Theis and Vagn had associated with in their young criminal past.
Personally, I found that the book's ending was far more satisfying and sat better with me in light of the strong characterisations throughout the book. The killer in the book is not the same person as it was at the end of the series.
